Project Overview

Client: Startup focused on neighborhood connectivity
Role: UX/UI Designer
Objective: Create a mobile application to foster social connections among neighbors

The Problem

The client was inspired by the challenge of moving into a new home and finding it difficult to connect with neighbors. Many residents appeared introverted and hesitant to initiate social interactions, leading to a lack of community engagement.

Research

To understand the problem better, I researched the possible residents and developed several user personas:

Occupation: Project manager
Age: 34 years Status: married, no kids
Income: $60k
Issue: She moved in town recently and it is hard for her to meet neighbors.

Occupation: Architect
Age: 29 years
Status: living with girlfriend
Income: $78k Issue: He and his partner are working remotely and are looking for well-organized household.

Occupation: Senior construction manager
Age: 54 years
Status: living with his wife
Income: $117k
Issue: Do not have time to socialize in person but are looking forward to.

Key Insights:

  • Residents are willing to socialize but lack time and opportunities.
  • There is a need for a platform to facilitate easy interaction and event organization.

Solution

The goal was to create a user-friendly neighborhood app that combines features from existing apps like Facebook, Instagram, Hoplr, and Nextdoor. The app aims to provide an organized platform for residents to socialize, meet new neighbors, and participate in local events.

App Features

  • Introduce Yourself: A simple way for residents to share information about themselves.
  • Explore Neighborhood: Discover neighbors and activities within a 300m radius.
  • Event Organization: Plan and join neighborhood events and activities.
  • Personalized Recommendations: Connect with neighbors who share similar interests.
  • Community Engagement: Share statuses, posts, and host talk shows within the community.
  • Local Alerts: Stay informed about neighborhood updates like traffic, garbage collection, etc.
  • Integrated Map: View the location of friends and neighbors with customizable visibility settings.
  • Chat Functionality: Communicate with neighbors, with privacy controls to prevent harassment.
  • Easy Sign-up: Use Facebook or Google accounts for seamless registration and profile syncing.

Visual Design

The app’s design focuses on creating a welcoming and accessible interface:

    • Color Scheme: Soft, high-contrast colors to ensure readability and visual appeal.
    • Rounded Edges: Elements with rounded edges to convey a friendly and approachable look.
    • Accessibility: Consideration for users with special visual needs, using high-contrast color combinations.

Future Considerations V2

Potential features and improvements for the next version of the app, based on user feedback and evolving needs. – In progress.
